This is a 10 week computer programming course where we will learn the environment and language of SCRATCH. Learn fundamental programming skills using the graphical programming environment, SKETCH. SKETCH, from MIT, simplifies much of the graphics work and makes working with pictures, sounds, the mouse and keyboard quite easy. We'll be learning all the variables, loops, etc of programming by making games, something SKETCH really excels at.

(FULL) Jr. Computer Programming

This is a parent volunter run 10 week beginning programming course aimed at kids ages 5-7. Even if you can't read, you can learn the basics of programming with loops, functions and objects. Scratch Jr makes it fun and easy in a way that they won't even realize that they are learning. From Scratch Jr's Website: Coding is the new literacy! With ScratchJr, young children (ages 5-7) can program their own interactive stories and games. In the process, they learn to solve problems, design projects, and express themselves creatively on the computer. Will require each parent to volunteer for 2 shifts (friday from 3:15-4:15pm) for the session to support the parent volunteer teacher. Sign ups to come.

Art Club

Join us for an 11 week spring art club session where we will Discover Art: Past and Present. Students will paint, draw and sculpt with support and instruction from CSMA faculty. We will begin the journey in the ancient world and progress to the modern/contemporary arts. Students will create works of art inspired by the artists and cultures that influenced our history. Teachers develop a new curriculum with each new session. Art Club is a program of the Community School of Music and Arts taught by CSMA faculty. Maximum Enrollment: 18 NOTE: Parents are responsible for instructing children about club location/time. and for making any special arrangements required to ensure that children arrive on time. Spring 2017: What do your kids do for mental education? BayAreaChess provides professional chess instruction tailored to each student’s skill level. Students will learn the rules of the game, basic strategy, tactics, endgames and advanced strategy. Our unique reward system ensures that each child feels success and progress at their own pace. Come and experience the fun and exciting game of chess! Chess is every bit as challenging and fun as any sport and we will make sure your child feels this through our program. Beginning students will learn the rules of chess, piece movement, general strategy and simple checkmates. Experienced students will learn advanced concepts such as positional play, endgames, tactics and game study. Chess is an excellent tool in developing strategic thinking and decision making skills that have many benefits beyond the chessboard. Students are divided in class based on skill level. BayAreaChess, a non-profit organization serving the Bay Area since 2005, promotes a team atmosphere where students support each other in their learning.

Creative Crafts

Kids will learn all the techniques of quilling, beading, painting crafts together in one class. This class will be open to any creative ideas in what they will learn. They will come home everyday with one craft what they will do on their own. Some specific examples of crafts they will learn are: Quilling cards, making purses and wallets, roses, painting on canvas, Diya decorations and Jewelry making etc.

Creative Writing: Chatterboxes

Picture this: A fire alarm goes off in school and this time, it’s for real. Firemen swarm the school while you wait on the blacktop. What happens? Everyone starts whispering, asking: What’s going on? What happened? Everyone wants the true story. In this creative writing class, we’ll create stories the Society of Young Inklings way-through improvisational games and activities. Writers will act out scenes from their stories, and explore each of their characters’ unique voices, humor and personality. By the end of the class, writers will each have created their own short story or script for a play. This workshop is designed to inspire and challenge young writers based on their unique needs and skill level. Instructors are professional working writers who communicate with families throughout session and provide feedback on each child’s progress. During writing time instructors circulate to individualize the learning process for each student. Students receive a workbook and writing journal. Young writers will share their masterpieces with family and friends on the last day of class.

Intro to Sports

ntro to Sports class: In the Intro to Sports class, we will be learning the basics of Basketball, Flag Football, and Kickball. Each sport will be practiced for 3 classes, and the remaining 2 classes will be fun, PE style games that will work on the same motor skills that they used during the first 9 weeks. This is a great place for your child to practice their motor skills and develop confidence in each sport. No matter your child's experience, Intro to Sports will be a fun place to get out and play! Open for 2nd through 5th Grade. If your 2nd Grader is brave enough to play with the bigger kids, I'd love to have them join!

Authentic Shotokan Karate. Classes follow traditional procedures, provide exercise and self discipline, and are also fun! Students will learn the most important kihon (basic) techniques and apply them in basic and very controlled self-defense practice, as well as engaging in strength, speed and balance drills. They will get exercise while learning techniques and strategies that could help them avoid or get out of a dangerous situation. Tests are provided for no charge at the end of each session. Our club is designed to be a place for our Spanish speaking friends to share their language and culture and for our non-native Spanish speaking students to join and learn. Everyone will have a chance to practice their skills, learn new vocabulary, work together reading, playing games, singing and doing crafts. We will discuss and observe cultural holidays and events and have fun sharing and learning together. All levels of Spanish language welcome and encouraged to join. This will be an immersion experience with all instructions and conversation in Spanish.
